Review of Autograph – “Sign In Please”

My choice for this month’s CD review is from a band known as Autograph. The album is titled Sign In Please. The band Autograph was discovered by David Lee Roth of Van Halen back in the early 80’s and subsequently toured with them on their 1984 tour, so you know the band had to be good.

Unfortunately, most people only recognize their big hit “Turn Up the Radio” but this album has much more to offer than that. I remember this song being so big that it was even played in some dance clubs, which I thought was odd.

The central theme of this album is having fun. Isn’t that what the 80’s were all about? This album is filled with good catchy, (sometimes cheesy) lyrics mixed with keyboards and good guitar solos which smells like success. There are a couple of songs that stand out in my mind. “My Girlfriends’s Boyfriend Isn’t Me” is a very up tempo song that talks about the inability of a girl to decide which guy she wants. Sound familiar? Another rockin’ tune, “Nineteen and Nonstop” is a song about another girl being crazy in her youth, but isn’t this really a reminder of how we all were at that age…no worries, right!

My personal favorite on the album is “Friday“. It serves as the whole backbone of the album…having a good time. Remember we couldn’t wait for Friday either, could we? “Cloud Ten“, “Thrill of Love“, “In the Night“, “Deep End” and “All I’m Gonna Take” are great songs solidifying this album as a perfect one for your 80’s collection. I don’t really understand why these guys didn’t make it farther with this album. For a first album I thought it was great. Shame on whomever didn’t promote it more.

Definitely pick this up if you don’t already have it! You rockers with this album at home, dust if off and play it loud. You will find yourself reliving those old memories of your youth in your head. This is good stuff!
