Review of Jackyl at Rockfest ‘08
I may be going out on a limb here people, but this may have very well been the best performace at Rockfest ‘08. Throw in a mix of Jackyl’s hard southern “shit kickin” rock and Jesse James Dupree’s stage antics and you have a serious party, and that’s what it was.
Jackyl wasted no time playing their hits with such favorites as “Push Comes To Shove“, “Down On Me“, “When It Will Rain“, Dirtee Little Mind” and “Red Neck Punk“. The band also played “Kill The Sunshine” which was written with Brian Johnson of AC/DC.
If any of you have seen Jesse James Dupree before you know this guy is crazy! He would frequently stop the roadies from handing him a guitar by telling them “I’m talking to my friends in Wisconsin, are you in a hurry, don’t rush me” and then asks the crowd “Are you in a hurry?”. Of course the crowd would yell “NO”. This guy is a showman! Out of nowhere he starts running through the crowd and I mean climbing over seats until he ends up on the spotlight tower. He moons everyone! When Jesse and the security guards, that were trying to follow him, got back to the stage, Jesse announced it was time for a power ballad and the band broke into “She Loves My Cock“. That made the crowd laugh. I’ve seen lots of bands play the “Star Spangled Banner” but I’ve never seen anyone play it on a guitar with their teeth. Pretty cool Jesse.
Finally, what Jackyl show would be complete without the “Lumberjack” song and the infamous chainsaw. Jesse looked pissed off when the roadie tried to bring it out on stage because he was going to suprise everyone. Jesse fired that baby up and had it humming the intro. Speaking of chainsaws, some neighbor of ours in the campground had a six foot long chainsaw autographed by the band which was really cool.
Jackylfest ‘08 as Jesse called it was a huge success. This was Jackyl’s fourth performace at Rockfest and I don’t think anyone will have a problem with them returning in the future.
Jackyl has one more performance scheduled this summer on August 16, 2008 at The Tabernacle in Atlanta, GA. Tickets are $15. They are also playing at Rock The Bayou.
