Review of Sevendust at Rockfest

Sevendust has to be my sleeper band for Rockfest 2009. It’s kind of like a basketball team that you know is good but a little under the radar as far as talent. This is how I felt about Sevendust, until Sunday afternoon in Cadott.
Sevendust has played in some smaller venues around Central Illinois in the past, and to be quite honest with you I didn’t have any desire to see them. Boy was I wrong. This band put on a show early Sunday afternoon that really set a precedent for the next three acts to follow.
The band came out with lead singer Lajon Witherspoon taking charge of the crowd and the band with their agressive stage presence, immediately whipped the crowd into a frenzy sure to wake them up from their hangovers from the night before.
This is a note to all you boring bands out there. People want to be entertained! If you are going to just stand there without any crowd interaction and play, do us all a favor and cancel. Lead singer Lajon and the rest of the guys made sure this didn’t happen. Lajon was out in the crowd a few times and the band never stopped moving during the entire set. I know the guys had to be tired after the show especially drummer, Morgan Rose, who was wailing ferociously on those drums the whole show. At times, between songs, I saw someone behind the drums massaging his shoulders.
Great effort is all I have to say about this band. Hopefully next time they visit Rockfest they will be much later in the day, closer to the headliner where they deserve to be.
Sevendust is performing at Austin’s Saloon and Eatery in Libertyville, IL on August 20, 2009 and Nuttys North in Sious Falls, SD in August 21, 2009.
