Review of The Bangles and Heart – Tickets & Tour Dates
The Illinois State Fair grandstand was packed on Saturday, August 22, 2009 for The Bangles and Heart concert. The weather was a perfect summer evening and so was the music. The Bangles played all their big hits, “Manic Monday“, “Eternal Flame” and “Walk Like An Egyptian“. The crowd was singing along and having a good time. The ladies have aged very nicely, they are as beautiful as ever. The Bangles’ peak years were my high school years, 1984 – 1987. The concert brought back some very fond memories, and I even saw a high school friend at the concert. It was great to see such a diverse audience. The age range of fans at this show was around 8 years to 60 years.
The highlight of the evening was Heart. I saw Heart back in September when they opened for Journey but they only played a short set. I have been looking forward to seeing Heart as a headliner ever since.
Not a lot of stage theatrics, just a lot of rockin music. Heart opened the show with one of my favorites, “Barracuda”. The hits kept on coming: “Never”, “Kick It Out”, “Straight On”, “Love Alive” and then a cover of Led Zeppelin “Ramble On“. Next Nancy sang “Avalon” and played the mandolin for “These Dreams”. The keyboard player is Debbie Shair and she really seems to be enjoying herself up there with her pig tails bobbing around. The other members of the band are male, Craig Bartock on guitar and Ric Markmann on bass. “What About Love“, “Alone” a cover of the Who’s “Rain on Me” and finally “Crazy On You“. Ann and Nancy said goodnight and left the stage, the crowd was on their feet, chanting and clapping for more. Heart came back and the first song they played was written for Ann’s gardner who passed away. She said they were good friends and she wrote “Sand” for him. It will be on the next album they release. It was a touching song. Next was another Led Zeppelin cover, “Misty Mountain Hop” and the final song was “Magic Man“. It was an amazing show but I could have listened to them play for hours. My all time favorite Heart song is “Cherry Blossom Road” and I haven’t seen them play it live. Maybe the next time they come around…..
Ann’s vocals are as powerful as ever and Nancy can sure rock a guitar! Ann even played a flute briefly during the show. The flute happens to be one of my favorite instruments, probably because I played one all through grade school and high school. You don’t see them very often in rock n roll.
There are a few remaining dates for these talented ladies. If you are a fan of their music but haven’t seen them live, you owe it to yourself to go! Here are the dates and you can get your tickets through Ticketmaster or TicketsNow.
