Review of Led Zeppelin’s IV

Timeless. That is the only word that best describes this album. All eight of the songs are classic. This band built quite a reputation with “Yardbirds” founder Jimmy Page on guitar, Robert Plant’s undeniable rock persona and vocals, John Paul Jones on bass and Mr. John Bonham, one of the most respected and talented drummers of all time.

Little did they know back then that not only would IV stand the test of time but they would be regarded in many circles as the greatest rock band of all time; and having the greatest rock album of all time.

Folksy is another word that comes to mind. It definitely makes every song stand out when it’s played. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t start singing along when “Black Dog” comes on and you hear Hey hey mama said the way you move, gonna make you sweat, gon’ make you groove, or It’s been a long time since I rock and rolled from “Rock and Roll“. If you deny this you are lying!

“Stairway to Heaven” no matter how many times it’s played you listen. It’s just too beautiful to turn off! “Misty Mountain Top” picks up the pace nicely and gives me an awesome visual of embarking on a nomadic journey. “Going to California” is one of those songs anyone can relate with. If you have ever moved from somewhere you’ve lived for a long time you definitely will have an aching in your heart.

Let’s face it, when most people think of Led Zeppelin, Robert Plant comes to mind with his powerful voice and lyrics but if you really take the time to listen you will hear some of the best musicianship ever put out on any album.

Check out John Paul Jones on bass during “Rock and Roll“, some beautiful mandolin played on “The Battle of Evermore” by none other than guitarist Jimmy Page and John Bonham’s drumming on “Four Sticks” because he played with four sticks at the same time!

There is no doubt in my mind that this is regarded as the number one album by many people. Put your’s back in the CD player and give it a listen. I’m sure you won’t have any doubts either. One thing is for certain, there is no dust on my copy!

Members of Led Zeppelin say all systems are ready to go for a tour even if Robert Plant refuses to join them. Sources say the person in line for the job of frontman is Myles Kennedy who has been the frontman for the rock band Alter Bridge. If the tour happens without Robert Plant, the band may not be called Led Zeppelin though. This may be a good move. It’s hard to imagine Led Zeppelin without Plant.

Robert Plant has stated that he has no intentions of touring with anyone for the next two years. He finished touring with Alison Krauss a couple of months ago. Maybe he just needs a break, maybe if the other members of Led Zeppelin would wait for a couple of years he would be willing to participate in a Led Zeppelin reunion.

I feel that if Jones, Page and Bonham can’t wait for Plant, touring with a name other than Led Zeppelin is a good idea. I would go see them either way, but using the iconic name Led Zeppelin may turn some loyal Zeppelin fans off.

What do you think? Would you go see these talented musicians without Plant? Would the name of the band make a difference?

Well, I’ve been reading rumors all over the net about Robert Plant joining Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham in the studio and on a tour in 2009. I’ve been so excited because after last month’s announcement that Jason Bonham was leaving Foreigner and that he has even gone to England a couple of times to jam with Page and Jones I just knew the rumors must be true. I was so glad that Robert Plant was onboard. I was too young to see Led Zeppelin when they were together before but my mom listened to them all the time and I love their music. I used to play “Stairway to Heaven” on my flute. Ha! I have always wanted to see them live.

Robert Plant burst my bubble yesterday! The official statement at www.RobertPlant.com states “It‘s both frustrating and ridiculous for this story to continue to rear its head when all the musicians that surround the story are keen to get on with their individual projects and move forward,” Robert Plant said. “I wish Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham nothing but success with any future projects,” he added. Robert Plant is currently touring with Alison Krauss and their last date is October 5, 2008. After that, Plant has no intentions of touring with anyone for at least the next two years. He will not be recording or touring with Led Zeppelin. The site warns of buying tickets for such a show because they will be bogus.

Now what? Will Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham go on without Robert Plant? Will they follow in the footsteps of Boston and Journey and find a replacement on YouTube or MySpace? I think that worked out really well for Boston and Journey by the way. I did see a Led Zeppelin tribute band at Rockfest in 2007 called Zed Leppelin and they were awesome! At the time I figured they were the closest thing to Led Zeppelin I’d ever get to see. The lead singer not only sounded like Robert Plant, but he looked like a younger Plant too. I don’t know about the rest of you, but if they are able to find someone who has similar vocal ability as Robert Plant and they go on tour, I’m there!! I know it can never be the same, but I never had the opportunity to see the real thing so this is close enough for me.

On August 22, 2008 in an interview with the “JJ & Lynne” morning show on 94.7 WCSX station in Detroit, MI Jason Bonham announced that he is leaving Foreigner at the end of this month. He also talked about going to England a couple of times to jam with Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones. Jason didn’t talk about specific details just that they are doing some new material and writing. Robert Plant has not been involved.

This news raises some questions of course. Who will play drums on the remainder of the Foreigner tour? Is Led Zeppelin going to release a new album? Will Robert Plant be involved?

Good questions…I guess we’ll have to wait for the answers.
